About the Event
Sewing & Sharing “Dream Pillows” — A Gathering of Women: Led by Candis Collick
Years ago at The Gathering I took a class taught by Christine Sy. Christine shared the oral traditions and process of making cedar pillows, focusing on women’s relationship with giizhigaatig (northern white cedar) and what she had been taught about its use as women’s medicine for sleeping difficulties like insomnia and nightmares. She also shared the Anishinaabe story of Nokomis Giizhigaatig (Grandmother Cedar).
Traditionally an elder female will make the Cedar Pillows for the younger females in her family, sharing the story of Grandmother Cedar and the significance of the pillow along with how it is to be used. I call these traditional Cedar pillow "Dream Pillow” when gifting them to my granddaughters to help them understand their significance better.
The pillows are simple squares of cotton lined with flannel (both pre-washed before construction) and then filled with tiny white cedar "needles" the maker has stripped - typically while sitting with a group of women who share their stories during the process. The pillows are not over-stuffed, the needles from two or three boughs are enough. Once filled, the open end is hand-stitched closed.
Each participant will be provided enough materials to produce two 5”x7” Dream Pillows during the class.
